Islamic varsity ‘advises’ duo to quit student activist group

The varsity today issued a letter to Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam se-Malaysia president Mohd Imran Md Ishak and deputy Ahmad Fahmi Mokhtar urging them to quit the group. – The Malaysian Insider pic, February 20, 2015.Two students from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (Usim) have allegedly been “advised" by the varsity’s authorities to resign from an undergraduates’ movement for purportedly flouting the institution’s rules and regulations.Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam se-Malaysia (Gamis) president Mohd Imran Md Ishak and deputy Ahmad Fahmi Mokhtar received a letter from the varsity on Wednesday on the matter, said committee member Saiful Mujahid Mohd Fadzil."In the letter, Usim vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Musa Ahmad insisted that Imran and Fahmi resign from Gamis."And if they resist, the university said it will proceed with disciplinary action against the two," Saiful told The Malaysian Insider.Saiful, who is the head of Gamis national political council, said the group condemned Usim's actions and that its excuses did not make sense.In the letter, Musa stated three reasons why Usim asked the students to resign.Usim said Gamis was not registered with the Registrar of Societies (RoS).It added that the involvement of Imran and Fahmi in the movement would link the varsity's name with an unregistered body.The university also urged both undergraduates, who are final-year students, to concentrate on their industrial training which will begin on February 23."This is the first time Usim students have been elected to head Gamis and the first time that the university has sent a 'love letter' to its students."We regret this as Usim should be proud that its students were elected to be members of Gamis, which is known for its political struggles in campus for the past 25 years," said Saiful, who is a student of Universiti Tenaga Nasional.Saiful said Gamis was willing to meet with Musa to clear any confusion or misconception the university might have of the student movement.Imran, who took over the president’s post on January 31, is a final-year actuarial science and risk management student.In a joint statement, Imran and Fahmi said they would not budge from their positions or be intimidated by the university.They said they intended to meet with Usim's highest authorities next week.They added that the letter from university was sudden and that the administration had not called them up over their actions. – February 20, 2015.
