Golf should shed ‘elite’ reputation for more Malaysian success, says Najib


Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is hopeful of a future generation of Malaysian golfers at the top of their game. – The Malaysian Insider pic, February 8, 2015.The prime minister wants the game of golf to be enjoyed by more Malaysians instead of having the reputation of being a sports for the elite, as it does now, Bernama reported today.Datuk Seri Najib Razak said he hopes more Malaysians will be able to pick up the sport."It should be accessible to all Malaysians at every level, as that could help more Malaysians emerge as top golfers in the future."On that note, I would like to congratulate the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) for starting a programme to promote golf at the school level where 11 schools are participating in this programme."I have given RM2 million to the MGA to promote golf at school level and I am willing to contribute more in the future," he was quoted as saying by Bernama, in his speech before the Maybank Malaysian Open 2015 prize giving ceremony at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC), in Kuala Lumpur today.The Maybank Malaysian Open title went to India's Anirban Lahiri. He took home the trophy and US$500,000 (RM1.75 million), presented by Najib at the 18th hole of the KLGCC.On the tournament, the prime minister said he was proud of the live telecast attracting more than 400 million viewers around the world.According to Bernama, Najib also congratulated national golfer Danny Chia for his performance which resulted in him becoming the best Malaysian player in the tournament and another local Gavin Kyle Green, who was crowned the tournament's best amateur player.The Maybank Malaysian Open which started on Thursday, is part of the European Tour and attracts a good line-up of golfers annually.Lahiri became only the fourth Indian to win a European Tour title. He held off a strong challenge from Austrian Bernd Wiesberger in the final round today to win with a final tally of 16-under.Englishman Paul Waring and Spaniard Alejandro Canizares finished tied for third on 13-under, while defending champion Lee Westwood finished fifth. – February 8, 2015.
